Successful implementation of SEBA equipment at the Kiel Canal - in tandem with the Kiel-Holtenau Waterway and Shipping Authority

Expansion and Modernization

During the expansion of the Kiel Canal from the Levensauer viaduct to Großkönigsförde earthworks will most likely have an impact on the water-bearing layers, which are used for potable water by local water suppliers. In order to detect possible influences on the groundwater resources - water levels as well as their condition (conductivity, temperature) - the Kiel-Holtenau Waterway and Shipping Authority expands the existing measuring station network of 59 groundwater measuring points (GWM) from offline operation to a total of 72 groundwater measuring points with new measuring technology, including remote data transmission.

New technology for the Kiel Canal

Since March 2019, the existing monitoring network has been replaced by modern data loggers Dipper-PT (water level, temperature) and Dipper-PTEC (water level, temperature, conductivity) with additional remote data transmission (3G+). Due to the modular system, the data loggers and RDT module SlimCom 3G+ can be plugged together. Dipper-PT/PTEC and remote data transmission each have their own power supply. Depending on the quality of the mobile network and the types of observation wells (underfloor/overground), the SlimCom 3G+ was equipped with different types of antennas to ensure safe data transmission. Irrespective of the routine remote data transmission, alarms can also be sent via SMS to up to eight receivers in case specific parameters fall below freely definable event thresholds. In addition, the Dipper-PT/PTEC has an intelligent event management: Measurement and transmission cycles can be synchronized and adjusted for each channel.

Measurement data and battery status of the RDT module are initially transmitted once per day to an FTP server via data push. In addition, they will be transferred to a GW-Base®-supported database, provided by ribeka GmbH (Bornheim) and its internet application GW-Web®. All users have daily access to all measured data.

With the help of freely programmable maintenance slots, WSA Kiel-Holtenau staff has the possibility to conveniently configure the data loggers without having to leave their office. Robust, field-suitable handheld terminals (HDA-Pro) support the handling of the measuring technology on site. HDA-Pro and in-situ equipment communicate via wireless Bluetooth® and Bluetooth® module BlueCon 2.
